Does anyone know an elderly person who is stopped smoking abruptly?

my father after about 70 years of smoking has given up overnight and has dropped a stone and a half and he feels sickly and is coughing up phlegm this has been going on for about 5 weeks now any ideas please all the websites say symptoms subside within 2 weeks so getting worried
