What is the bare minimum to have for a fireplace?

So moved into an apt. and it has a fireplace, would liek to take advantage of it... what are the basics to have for a fireplace. also... theres a latch inside the chimney, that makes it so you can either keep it open or closed, i know its prolly stupid to ask, but should i keep it open or cosed? thanks
