Why is radial symmetry found among aquatic species insead other animals that live on land?

Radial symmetry is possible for species that live in an environment that is uniform all around them. But land animals must interact with their substrate. It's more useful for them to have an "up" and a "down" side. Think about a squirrel in a tree; now picture an animal shaped like a basketball trying to run up a branch.
