How should running fit into my exercise regimen?

I lift weights 3-4 times a week for 40 minutes, but when it comes to running I don't really have any schedule. My goals are to keep in good physical health (and mental, which running seems to promote). I want the benefits, but don't want to waste time overdoing it. How long and frequently should I run?
